Acuvue unveils disposable contact lenses for astigmatism

02.03.2012

By Martin Burns

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care has announced a new daily disposable soft toric contact lens for people with astigmatism.

The 1-Day Acuvue Moist Contact Lenses for Astigmatism are designed to alleviate symptoms for people suffering from the common vision problem, which affects how the eye focuses light.

According to the company, the new contacts will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of first disposable contact lens by offering a new solution to the problem of vision correction for those with astigmatism.

W Lee Ball, associate director of medical affairs at Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, said research has confirmed that nearly half of all patients requiring vision correction have levels of astigmatism that could affect visual performance in at least one eye.

"Additional studies show that toric soft contact lenses such as 1-Day Acuvue Moist Contact Lenses for Astigmatism provide significantly better visual acuity compared to spherical lenses for astigmatic patients, and provide comparable visual acuity to wearing glasses," he added.

The expert explained that the products feature a proprietary blink stabilised design, which harnesses the natural pressures of a blinking eye to help keep the lens in place, while quickly realigning the lens if it rotates out of position, which provides wearers with "consistent, all-day vision".

Dr Ball said that fluctuating vision during everyday activities such as reading a newspaper, using a computer or even watching TV when lying down can cause dissatisfaction among many astigmatic contact lens wearers.

He said that studies have demonstrated how certain contact lenses using blink stabilised technology have a number of advantages over other traditional soft toric contact lens designs in reducing variable vision and blur that often occur during these types of activities.

Recently, Acuvue announced it is to encourage people to run this year's London Marathon in contact lenses, rather than glasses, to see the benefits they can provide.ADNFCR-1853-ID-801308830-ADNFCR
